Government representa?tives to meet Tamil Nadu CM[ Thursday, 07 July 2011, 04:15.04 AM GMT +05:30 ]Encouraged by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s assessment that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was “fully conscious” of the realities of managing the India-Sri Lanka relationship, Colombo is learnt to have asked its envoy to engage with the Tamil Nadu government.

Moves are afoot, sources said, to schedule a meeting between Sri Lankan High Commissioner Prasad Kariyawasam and Jayalalithaa in the coming weeks.

The Sri Lankan envoy returned from Colombo on Tuesday and officials familiar with the developments said this “reaching out” was a conscious decision taken by the Sri Lankan government.

Sri Lanka is quite enthused at the PM’s assessment of the Tamil Nadu CM. He had told editors at last week’s interaction, “I have had good cooperation with Jayalalithaaji. I raised this matter with her the very first time. Whatever be the resolutions that were passed in the Assembly, I found her fully conscious of the complexities and the realities of managing this relationship.”

Officials said the engagement with the new CM had begun soon after her landslide victory in the Assembly polls in May. Lankan Foreign Minister G L Peiris wrote a “congratulatory letter” to Jayalalithaa, wishing her welland indicating Colombo’s intention to “work with her”.

According to the sources high ranking official of the government has organize a special discussions at the Temple Trees this regard.

Through the election canvassing the government is hoping to gain good name among the people in Northern Province.

During the discussion government delegates pointed out by achieving victory in the Northern Province government will be able to solve the problems of war crime in an easy way.

According to the sources during the discussion official has decided to appoint Minister Basil Rajapaksa to administrate all the election work in the province and also they decided to appoint special armed group to cause disturbance to the election activities of opposition parties in the Northern Province, sources said.

Government to handover a written proposal on power sharing[ Wednesday, 06 July 2011, 01:44.49 PM GMT +05:30 ]The government will hold another round of talks with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) today.

The discussion is to be held at the Presidential Secretariat this evening, government sources said.

According to the sources government will hand over a written response to the TNA proposals on sharing the power would be submitted to the discussion today.

The government delegation is also to talk about the power devolution units, sources say.

The government delegation comprises Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva, Prof. G.L. Peiris, MPs Rajiv Wijesinghe, and Sajin Vaas Gunawardhana. The TNA is represented by MPs R. Sampanthan, the leader of TNA, Suresh Premachandran, Mavai Senathirajah, and M.A. Sumanthiran.

This is the eighth round of talks between the two parties.

Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian from Batticaloa district, P. Selvarajah has blamed the Mahinda Rajapaksa government for false records of resettlement in the province. While many thousands people still find themselves displaced, their names are marked as resettled in the SL government records. �For example, people who displaced from Kagnchi-kudichchaa'ru and Thangka-vealaayutha-puram during the war are still living as displaced in Thampiluvil and Vinaayakapuram in Thirukkoayil in Ampaa'rai. But, their names are registered as resettled in the government list,� Mr. Selvarajah MP told media on Saturday. Rajapaksa government has also seized thousands of acres of lands in Ampaa'rai for the families of the Sinhala military personnel, he further accused.

The traditional lands of the Tamil people in Ampaa'rai district are being systematically encroached by the Sinhalese.

The Deputy Minister of Resettlement of the Rajapaksa government, Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna and Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanathan alias Pillayan are not only keeping mum on the injustices being committed upon the Tamil people, but they are also a party contributing to the injustices, the MP blamed further.

The Deputy minister of resettlement has also gone on record lying on the number of people remaining to be resettled in the province as only ten thousand, blamed the TNA Parliamentarian said adding that the people in the East are not going trust the words of this deputy minister.

Recently, Poththuvil Divisional Secretary, members of the Rural Development Society (RDS) and the residents of the village Ma'natcheanai, situated in Poththuvil DS division of Ampaa'rai district, exposed a Sinhala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), his 11 policemen and a contractor employed by him for encroaching 635 acres of lands of Tamil residents in the village.

Government completed the resettleme​nt program in Jaffna peninsula - Minister Basil Rajapaksa[ Sunday, 03 July 2011, 03:45.11 PM GMT +05:30 ]Eight hundred and sixty three families who were displaced from their home towns during the war were allowed to resettle in Vadamarachchi East in Jaffna from today.

The families can now resettle in Pokkaruppu, Vettrilaikernai and Maruthankerny areas which were under military control earlier during the war.

A function allowing the displaced to resettle back in their home towns that were affected by war was held in Pokkaruppu attended by Chief Guest of the event Economic Minster Basil Rajapaksa. Ten houses built by the Sri Lanka Army were also handed over to the people during the event.

While speaking in the function The Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa said that government has completed the resettlement programme in Jaffna peninsula by resettling the final stage of  IDPs in their home town today (July 03) .

Sri Lanka bow to ICC ban on government interference

Sri Lanka said on Thursday it would fall in line with anInternational Cricket Council (ICC) directive aimed at banning governmentinterference in national cricket boards.

 

Sports minister Mahindananda aAluthgamage said an electionwould be held in January for the Sri Lanka Cricket Board which, for the pastseven years, has been appointed by the government.

 

�We will abide by ICC rules,� Aluthgamage said.

 

The governing body, holding its annual meeting in Hong Kong,announced a ban on countries making political appointments to national boards,vowing to free the sport from undue government influence.

 

As well as Sri Lanka, the reform, which allows the ICC tosuspend a member country for non-compliance, will impact Pakistan andBangladesh.

 

In Pakistan, the president is the national cricket board�spatron.

 

All member boards have been given until the next ICC meetingin June 2012 to implement the new ruling and a further 12 months - to June 2013- before any sanctions will be considered, Times of India reports.

According to the sources, the government has taken various steps to hold 2018 Common Wealth Games in Sri-Lanka and sources also said Rs.264 million had been paid to the British company to carry out advertisements this regard.

US$46.2 million had been spent for printing the books which explain the government’s plans regarding the organization of the event.

However UNP MP Harsha De Silva said total expenditure of the organization of the Common Wealth Games will be Rs.440 billion.

No pressure from Indian government - President Rajapaksa[ Wednesday, 29 June 2011, 03:12.01 AM GMT +05:30 ]President Mahinda Rajapaksa denied that he had come under pressure from India to offer the minority Tamils a political solution, saying that any settlement to the matter will have to be approved by Parliament.

"There was no pressure from India on the thirteenth amendment of thirteen plus," Rajapaksa told reporters.

Responding to a query on the visit by Indian National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar, he said the Indians had only discussed with him routine bilateral issues.

The Indian officials visited Colombo early this month in the backdrop of a call by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to impose economic sanctions on Sri Lanka.

Rajapaksa said Menon had indicated to him the proposal made by his own Cabinet minister Douglas Devananda on the need for Sri Lankan parliament to
thrash out the question of a political solution to the island's ethnic question.

He said appointing a parliamentary select committee on the ethnic question was not a delaying tactic. "Any solution that comes up will have to be approved in parliament," the president said. "I will back any solution approved by parliament".

"While having talks with political parties (with Tamil National Alliance) we can have PSC talks at the same time. If we wait for political party talks to end and then have PSC discussions, this will cause delays," he said. The president said the election for the northern provincial council will be held "next year".

He wanted the parties to start preparing for the polls which will be the first ever for the council since separated from the east in the supreme court ordered demerger of 2007.

On the present international campaign against Sri Lanka by the UN and other western nations, he said it was to be countered by submitting two separate reports. They will deal with the humanitarian nature of the government s military campaign that ended in May 2009 and the military aspects of it.
