India seeks to deepen Indo-Lanka ties

India seeks to deepen Indo-Lanka ties[ Monday, 04 July 2011, 04:24.45 PM GMT +05:30 ]India on Monday sought inputs from individuals and institutions in Sri Lanka to deepen the political and economic relations between the two neighbours following the end of the civil war in the country.

As India expands its activities in Sri Lanka since the end of a three-decade ethnic conflict in May 2009, the Indian High Commission here called on "individuals, institutions and groups to submit proposals aimed at developing India-Sri Lanka relations".

The government of India seeks to enhance the bilateral relationship with Sri Lanka, the High Commission said in release here.

Last year, new Indian consulates were opened in Jaffna, the northern capital and in Hambantota, the deep southern district homebase of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

There are many areas of Indian investment in Sri Lanka and also assistance to resettle the Tamil civilians displaced due to the ethnic conflict.

India is also assisting Sri Lanka in reconstruction of its war-ravaged northern region by extending grants to build railway projects.

Indian leaders have sought a "meaningful" devolution package for the minority Tamils to address their political aspirations.

India is taking a keen interest in Colombo's plans to arrive at a political solution acceptable to Tamils but taking a less hands on approach unlike in the late 1980s when it sent its military as part of the 1987 Indo-Lanka accord.
