Navy denies the arrest of Indian fishermen

Navy denies the arrest of Indian fishermen[ Monday, 04 July 2011, 03:39.21 PM GMT +05:30 ]Sri Lanka Navy has denied Indian media reports that said the Sri Lankan Navy men today detained 14 Indian fishermen but freed them hours later on sighting an Indian Navy vessel near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

Navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya has denied the Indian media report and said that the Navy has not made any such arrest of Indian fishermen today.

According to a PTI report, the 14 fishermen from Tamil Nadu were allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan waters and were taken into custody when they were near the third sand dune between Katchatheevu and Arichalmunai in the sea off Rameswaram.

The report said the Sri Lankan Navy personnel had come in two boats and ordered the group of 18 fishermen to surrender. They had arrested 14 fishermen and released 4 with one of their boats while towing another boat.

However, the Indian Navy has sent a vessel to rescue the fishermen after they were alerted of the incident. The released fishermen are reportedly being brought to the shore along with their boat.

Sri Lanka recently released 23 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on June 20 for illegally fishing in Sri Lankan waters off the Thalaimannar coast.
