Senior DIG N.K. Illangakoon officially assumed duties today at the 33rd Inspector General of police at the police Headquarters a short while ago.

He wasborn on 12th April 1956. He has studied at Udagama Maha Vidyalaya in Balangodaupto G.C.E. Advanced Level. He has excelled in athletics and has representedhis school in all island athletic competitions. He has also been a member ofseveral school societies. He enteredUniversity of Colombo in 1974. In 1979 he was conferred a Bachelor of EducationDegree. He has also won University Colours for athletics. In the year 1982 Mr.Illangkoon joined the Police Department as a Probationary AssistantSuperintendent of Police. After training, his first appointment was asAssistant Superintendent of Police, In-charge of Kurunegala District. He wasone of the pioneers of the Police Special Task Force established in 1983 and hehas served in Jaffna, Ampara and Batticaloa as an Area Commander and asthe Coordinating Officer of Monaragala District. Also he was the first DeputyCommandant of the Special Task Force. He was promoted to the rank of SeniorSuperintendent of Police in 1994. Thereupon after functioning as the OfficerIn-charge of Anuradhapura and Gampaha Divisions respectively, Mr. N. K.Illangakoon was appointed as the Director Special Branch in 1999 and was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police. He has servedas Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province(North), Ministerial Security Division, Presidential Security Division andCrime Range and was promoted to the rank of Senior Deputy Inspector General ofPolice in 2006. Since then he has held high positions such as Senior DeputyInspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province, SupportServices, Crimes Range and Narcotic Bureau Range, Discipline and Conduct,Transport and Communication, Welfare, Special Investigation Unit and PoliceLegal Range and Administration. During his unblemished29 years of service he has followed numerous training courses in Sri Lanka aswell as in Singapore, Italy, Nepal, United States of America, India and Korea.Furthermore, he has conferred the Post-Graduate Diploma in Criminal Justice andPolice Management from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. Mr. N. K.Illangakoon, has rendered an excellent service to the motherland by fulfillinghis responsibilities concerning the security arrangements for the internationalevents such as, South Asian Games held in 2006, Conference of Ministers ofYouth Affairs in Non-aligned Nations in 2007, 15th SAARC Conference of Heads ofState in 2008, International Indian Film Awards Festival in 2010 and the ICCWorld Cup 2011 which were held in Sri Lanka. During his termof office he has immensely contributed for the development of athleticsin the Police Department as the Chairman of the Police Athletic Association. Hehas also acted as the Vice-President of the Police Buddhist and ReligiousAffairs Association since 2007.
