Foreigners can travel North sans approval - Defence Ministry[ Monday, 04 July 2011, 02:07.18 PM GMT +05:30 ]Ministry of Defence lifted the imposed pre-travel approval exclusively for foreign passport holders when travelling to the North with effect from today (04).

According to Military Liaison Officer Officials, foreign pass port holders are no longer required to produce a MOD travel approval document at Omanthai entry/exist point- the main travel checking point located in Vavuniya.

“As normalcy is flourishing in the country we see that travel restrictions to foreign passport holders as no longer required”, the official stated commenting on the latest move.

This is a definite sign that the country is heading in the right direction with the rapid reconciliation and development taking place in Wanni and North he further said, the Defence Ministry stated.

No use of calling the Ministry of Petroleum Industries - Ravi Karunanaya?ke[ Monday, 04 July 2011, 01:59.47 PM GMT +05:30 ]The telephone numbers provided by the Ministry of Petroleum Industries, to report problems caused by the use of substandard petrol, do not work, says United National Party MP Ravi Karunanayake.

He claimed that he had dialed the telephone numbers himself in order to verify if they work, “they didn’t” he exclaimed during a meeting in Modara.

The telephone numbers 5664941, 5666328 and 5665082 were provided by the Petroleum Ministry yesterday (July 03) for consumers facing problems with their vehicles due to the use of substandard petrol to forward their complaints.

Ministry to survey nutritional status of new university entrants

Bookmark and Share The Ministry of Health has decided to conduct a nutritional status survey of new university entrants. Therefore all students selected to enter universities will be subject to a medical examination, as instructed by the Health Minister.


The medical examinations will be conducted on the 2,500 or so students until they are provided with the leadership training, the Ministry stated.


The nutritional status of the students will be identified and they will be given necessary advice and instructions. Students with low nutrition will be instructed on how to increase it and students suffering from corpulence will be instructed on how to control, the Ministry of Health intends.

Power and Energy Ministry earns Rs.3.3m in raids

The Ministry of Power and Energy statedthat nearly Rs. 3.3 million has been earned in raids conducted in theTrincomalee area during two days of raiding last month.

 

During these raids which were conductedfrom the June 25 to 27, 79 cases of obtaining electricity fraudulently werereported while 37 of these cases were of tampering with electricity meters, therest were where hooks were used to obtain electricity fraudulently.

 

Accordingly The Ministry of Power andEnergy stated that Rs. 790,000 was collected as court fines, and Rs. 2,509,081was recovered as losses to the CEB, bringing the total to Rs. 3,299,081.

Strict action against material harmful to human health - Ministry of Health[ Thursday, 30 June 2011, 07:56.13 AM GMT +05:30 ]No person shall import, manufacture, transport, advertise for sale, export for sale, sell, package, store, use or distribute any food packaging material or article which under normal and foreseeable conditions is injurious to human health, deteriorating the organoleptic character of food or changes the nature, substance and quality of food, with effect from July 1st , the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The statement adds that, every person who manufactures or imports any material or article intended to be used for the packaging of food shall be certified by the manufacturer to the effect that the raw material used in the manufacture of the packaging material or article meets the required quality or grade in compliance with international standards and that the packaging material or article is of food grade quality.

The Ministry adds that strict action would be taken against those who contravene the law.
