Power and Energy Ministry earns Rs.3.3m in raids

The Ministry of Power and Energy statedthat nearly Rs. 3.3 million has been earned in raids conducted in theTrincomalee area during two days of raiding last month.

 

During these raids which were conductedfrom the June 25 to 27, 79 cases of obtaining electricity fraudulently werereported while 37 of these cases were of tampering with electricity meters, therest were where hooks were used to obtain electricity fraudulently.

 

Accordingly The Ministry of Power andEnergy stated that Rs. 790,000 was collected as court fines, and Rs. 2,509,081was recovered as losses to the CEB, bringing the total to Rs. 3,299,081.

CAA earns Rs.35m in raids and fines this year

TheConsumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has earned more than Rs. 35 million throughfines this year from conducting various raids around the island while it hasearned more than Rs. 6 million in fines within this month alone.

 

Abulk of the fines were imposed on retailers for failing to display prices,selling products for more than the maximum retail price and the sale of expiredproducts, the CAA stated.

 

Italso stated that the primary focus has been on shops in the Colombo, Matale,Monaragala, Anuradhapura, Ampara, Puttalama, Kandy and Kalutara Districts.
