Kandy rugby clash

Kandy rugby clash[ Monday, 04 July 2011, 04:21.29 PM GMT +05:30 ]Kandy SC beat Air Force SC by 18-11 in a Caltex A Division league rugby game which was marred by unruly behavior by a section of the crowd at Nittawela yesterday.

Officials had to desert the game for nearly 20 minutes when supporters of both sides engaged in a fist fighting when Kandy SC were leading at 13-3.

The game resumed under tight security just before the half time.

Kandy SC scored from two tries, a conversion and two penalties while the Airmen replied with a try and two penalties.

At half time Kandy SC held on to a 13-6 lead.

A top level investigation is now on by Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) with regard to the incident that occurred at Nittawela yesterday during a rugby match, SLAF Spokesman Group Captain, Andrew Wijesuriya informed the media.The Group Captain said the SLAF was concerned of the matter and added that there were serious allegations levelled at Airmen present at the location. The SLAF is now investigating the reports and the videos, he noted.

The clash erupted between certain supporters of SLAF and Kandy during the match.

He also said these kinds of incidents often occur in Kandy during matches, he said.

He finally  stated that Sri Lanka Navy has had the same ugly experience in Kandy, recently.

A petition regarding the clash between the police and employees in the FTZ was handed over to the HRC

A petition regarding the clash between the police and employees in the FTZ was handed over to the HRC[ Wednesday, 29 June 2011, 08:35.14 AM GMT +05:30 ]A petition regarding the clash between the police and employees of the Katunayake Free Trade Zone (FTZ)was handed over to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) this morning.

The petition was handed over to the HRC by a group of UNP MPs including Ravi Karunanayake, Tissa Attanayake and Jayalath Jayawardena.

Speaking to the media UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake said that several employees of the FTZ suffered physical and mental trauma after the clash.

He said that while one employee had killed  several others are still suffering from the scars of the incident but are unable to come forward and seek compensation as they fear for their lives.

As a result, he said, the UNP together with a few others had decided to submit a petition to the HRC to seek its intervention.
