Possibilit?y of SL taken to Internatio?nal Court – Mangala[ Wednesday, 06 July 2011, 02:58.31 PM GMT +05:30 ]UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera said today that there is a possibility of Sri Lanka being taken before the International Criminal Court (ICC) before the end of this year by the International Community on the allegations of human rights violations leveled against the country during the war.

Addressing a press conference he said that the government has resorted to laughable acts in rejecting the allegations without conducting a proper investigation. He added that the government should be thankful to Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as it was because Sri Lanka did not become a signatory to the ICC when he was the Prime Minister that the present government is safe for the moment.

He noted that even a country that is not a signatory to the ICC could be hauled before it on the recommendations of the UN Security Council.

The UNP claimed that the allegationshurled against the Sri Lankan forces by international powers can be taken up ata war tribunal with or without the government?s cooperation.

 

UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera statedthis at a press conference held today (July 6) despite Opposition Leader RanilWickremasignhe stating earlier that no Sri Lankan can be taken to theInternational Criminal Court (ICC) because Sri Lanka is not a signatory of the RomeStatute.

 

However, he spoke of world leaderswho had been brought before the court despite their countries not having signedthe statute.


He added that the government should look to appointing a transparent committee in accordance with international laws to look into these allegations seriously in order to ease the international pressure on the country.


Furthermore, Samaraweera stated that the government should also look into investigating and identifying some of the soldiers depicted in the Channel 4 footage and take action against them if they are proven to have committed any crime.

Every possible step will be taken to release Rizana- Minister Hakeem[ Saturday, 02 July 2011, 01:57.59 PM GMT +05:30 ]The Minister of Justice Rauf Hakeem said every possible step will be taken in a diplomatic manner to free Rizana Nafeek Lankan housemaid who had been sentenced to death by the Saudi High Court.

Minister made this statement during a media briefini uin Colombo yesterday While speaking in the jornalist the Minister said according to the  laws of that country the Saudi king does not have the authority to even grant the request made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa recently.

Rizana could only be pardoned by the parents of the victimized child, he added.

Therefore a request has been made to send a special delegation to Saudi Arabia to hold discussions with the infant’s parents and to seek clemency for the Lankan housemaid, the Minister revealed.
