The teachers complained that the zonal education directors had made it compulsory for them to engage in the data collection that was a part of population census duty that had gone on for ten days.
The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) commenting on the use of teachers for population census duty said that it is unacceptable for the provincial authorities to instruct the zonal education directors to make it compulsory for the teachers in the area to engage in census duty. “This is the responsibility of the District Secretariat and the local government bodies.
The teachers have been instructed to visit houses in the area and collect the relevant data for ten days and fill out the data forms after school closed. For all their efforts they were to receive only Rs. 2000,” CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said, accusing the government of exploitation. Speaking further Mr. Stalin remarked that although obtaining the assistance of teachers who are willing to engage in the census duty is permissible, it should not be made compulsory.
