Group of Indian fishermen arrested by Lankan Navy[ Monday, 04 July 2011, 02:03.08 PM GMT +05:30 ]In the second such incident within a fortnight, 14 Indian fishermen were arrested on Monday by the Sri Lankan Navy and taken to the island nation for allegedly fishing in their waters.

Eighteen fishermen had set out to sea in two boats and 14 of them had been arrested and taken to Mannar district in Sri Lanka, Assistant Director of Fisheries Department Markandeyan, said quoting Coastguard officials. One boat was detained.

Four other fishermen were released along with one boat, he said.

Following the arrest, Coastguard officials said the released fishermen had told them that they had been fishing in Indian waters near the third sand dune off Arichalmunai when the Sri Lankan Navy arrested them around 12:30 PM.

Twenty-three Indian fishermen, along with five trawlers, were arrested on June 21 off the north east coast of Mannar by the Sri Lankan Navy which alleged that they were fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

They were remanded to judicial custody but released on June 29 following an order from Mannar district court.

Following the arrest, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention to secure their release.

Navy denies the arrest of Indian fishermen[ Monday, 04 July 2011, 03:39.21 PM GMT +05:30 ]Sri Lanka Navy has denied Indian media reports that said the Sri Lankan Navy men today detained 14 Indian fishermen but freed them hours later on sighting an Indian Navy vessel near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

Navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya has denied the Indian media report and said that the Navy has not made any such arrest of Indian fishermen today.

According to a PTI report, the 14 fishermen from Tamil Nadu were allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan waters and were taken into custody when they were near the third sand dune between Katchatheevu and Arichalmunai in the sea off Rameswaram.

The report said the Sri Lankan Navy personnel had come in two boats and ordered the group of 18 fishermen to surrender. They had arrested 14 fishermen and released 4 with one of their boats while towing another boat.

However, the Indian Navy has sent a vessel to rescue the fishermen after they were alerted of the incident. The released fishermen are reportedly being brought to the shore along with their boat.

Sri Lanka recently released 23 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on June 20 for illegally fishing in Sri Lankan waters off the Thalaimannar coast.

Bookmark and Share Sri Lanka Navy assisted in the repatriation of ten Sri Lankan fishermen, who were released from the Indian custody today (July 02).


The fishermen and two fishing boats named �Jaya Isuru� and �Yug Gaya� were handed over to SLN officials by the Indian Coast Guard Ship, ICGS Awaiyyar, at the Indo-Sri Lanka International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) in the seas north of Kankasanthurei.


They were brought to the KKS Harbour by Sri Lanka Naval Ship Wickrema II attached to the Northern Naval Command. Sri Lanka Coast Guard Vessel CG 43 also assisted the mission, the navy reported. Detained Indian fishermen released in Sri Lanka

The 23 Indianfishermen who were arrested in Sri Lanka last week, were released from judicialcustody yesterday and are expected to return home today, officials said.

 


The detained fishermen, along with their five boats that were seized, would behanded over by the Lankan Navy to Indian Coastguard today at the InternationalMaritime Boundary Line (IMBL), Coast Guard Assistant Commander Safaya said.



The fishermen are expected to reach Indian shores by evening. The release ofthe fishermen was ordered yesterday afternoon by Mannar district courtmagistrate Karuppiah Jeevarani, Intelligence Bureau officials said.



The fishermen, on board five trawlers, were held last week off the north eastcoat of Mannar by the Lankan Navy and then handed over to the Talaimannarpolice. Following the arrest, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had soughtPrime Minister Manmohan Singh�s intervention to secure their release, PTIreports.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris and Indian HighCommissioner Ashok K. Kantha discussed the issue and officials on both sideswere hopeful that a solution to the problem would be found by Tuesday. Asked ifSri Lanka linking therelease of its fishermen held in India to Tamil Nadu fishermen beingheld here would lead to delays in the release of the 23 fishermen, a senior SriLankan official said that this was not the case. �We can have a releasetomorrow [Tuesday],� he added.

 

�There are many Sri Lankan fishermen in Indian jails too. Wehave to work out a method to release them too,� said the official, when askedabout the incarceration of the Tamil Nadu fishermen in a jail here.

 

More than 70 Sri Lankan fishermen are in Indian jails. Whilethose who get caught by the Tamil Nadu police are let off relatively early, manywho get caught in Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, get incarcerated for long periods. Thelegal procedures in India,in these States, take longer to be completed.

 

Sri Lankan Navy had apprehended the fishermen on charges ofencroaching and poaching in Sri Lankan waters on the night of June 20, reports TheHindu.

Fishermen issue: Sri Lankan Navy retreats seeing Indian ship

An Indian Navy ship on a patrol turned out to be the saviour of a large group of fishermen from here when they were allegedly being chased away by Sri Lankan Navalmen close to International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), fisheries officials said today.

The fishermen had put out to sea in more than 600 boats yesterday after calling off their three-day old strike protesting detention of 23 fellow fishermen by Sri Lankan Naval personnel on June 20.
