C4 documentary has no bearing on Hambantota 2018 Commonwealth bid - Mahindananda June 27, 2011  01:26 pm

Bookmark and Share Sri Lankan Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, the co-chairman of the Hambantota 2018 bid for the Commonwealth Games, has dismissed the Channel 4 documentary as completely false adding that it has no bearing on the Hambantota 2018 bid for the Commonwealth Games.

The timing of the documentary is highly unwelcome in Sri Lanka as the Hambantota 2018 Commonwealth Games bid is currently entering its most crucial phase with their vital four-day inspection from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Evaluation Commission beginning today but Aluthgamage has dismissed the videos as fabricated.

The Channel 4 documentary is a completely false documentary, Aluthgamage told insidethegames.

The footage shown in it has been fabricated and we will not be affected by lies.

It was simply false and it has no bearing on the Hambantota 2018 bid for the Commonwealth Games at all.

Aluthgamages comments to insidethegames come after British Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister Alistair Burt claimed he was shocked by the horrific scenes in the documentary, which he said contained convincing evidence of violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.

The five-person Commission, chaired by Scotlands Louise Martin, have just completed their four-day inspection of Hambantotas only rivals for the 2018 Commonwealth Games the Gold Coast in Australia and are now in Sri Lanka undertaking official proceedings in the Asian country.

They will be based in Colombo for the majority of the visit due to the lack of facilities currently in place in Hambantota but will spend a day in the bid city to look at where the venues for a potential 2018 Commonwealth Games will be built.

Following the visit to Sri Lanka, the Commission will release a report for voting delegates on the two bid cities in September shortly before the vote for the Games at the Federations General Assembly in St Kitts and Nevis on November 11, insidethegames reports.

Dear Mr.Mahindananda, why do you talk about C4.Do you agree?.However we are going to waste Billions of rupees for this campaign. We are fighting against Australia.Have you got little bit of brain tissue in your Big head?. Without wasting mega money, first develop the country. We had enough mega projects!.Look at H´tota lake. The chairman of the port authority announced in Feb 2011 that first OIL shipment strating in JUNE 2011.I have not seen even a boat in H´tota sea. You are wastiing our money. This is a SIN minister.!

You are 100% correct. We already have paid few millions of US $ to a UK company to make the bidding campaign. We have very recent experience in co-hosting ICC World cup. What was the result? Now SL Cricket has lost over 63 million US $. Just Imagine how much we will lose if we host CWG. All corrupted ministers & officers from top to bottom are sucking our poor people´s money. So pathetic.

What is most disconcerting however is the statement issued by the Commonwealth Secretariat expressing concerns about the civil war in Sri Lanka based on the Channel 4 programme, especially at the same time as when the CG Evaluation Team is in Sri Lanka. Ironically, the Sec General & Political Adviser of the Secretariat are both former Indian Diplomats. Is somebody scared that we will conduct the Games more efficiently than India did in 2010? There was not a whimper of protest from the Commonwealth Secretariat when Sri Lankans were being slaughtered by Tamil Terrorists during the past 30 years. Nor when India chose to invade our airspace and drop weevil-infested parippu on Jaffna. They have woken up only when Sri Lanka indicated an interest in vying for the Games in 2018. Why is it that I get a strong smell of Gingelly Oil emanating from the Gold Coast in Australia ?

What a joke! They are going to inspect the potential venues. If Sri Lanka was serious, they should have made Colombo the venue.Malaysia had it in KL & India in New Delhi, both their capitals & not in a remote town where billions of dollars will be spent.

You are correct, as for this report Gvt dont have facilities in Hambanthota for accommodate these few visitors. So how come Gvt or Privet sector going to build 5*, 4* hotels to accommodate 2018 games from 6-7 years for min 200000 visitors.

Then Australians too should be shame of killing thier Indegeniuos People since 1700 till 1985. They killed more than 300,000 Aboriginies through vaviuos means. yes ofcourse there is something diffrent in Australia. (1) Their Opposition never sell the countries dignity like as JVP and UNP (2) Thier media love thier country unlike our Media. That´s why these issues never comesup when Australia Biding for a event like this. because they stand as a one nation together with their Opposition Liberal party to win this event for thier country.

When we have less educated Ministers they make statements without realising the repercussions they would have. This brainless statement will certainly cost us the games if we had a slightest chance. I wonder how he was able to converse with the evaluating committe of the Commonwealth Games, and explained matters. It would have been very embarassing to others

Sri Lanka needs to catch up for over 50 years of being backward. Some may not understand the significance of a bid such as this some may criticize it based on politics. This type of exposure is required to instill confidence in the economy which is an integral part of development and develop the tourism industry not to mention interest in sport!

I heard from the some other source that SL govt is going to spend around 4 billion US$ for such a big event. Lets compare it with our population. We have 20 million people and then one person should contribute at least Rs. 20,000 to target the above expenses within six or seven years. Its mean Rs. 2,850 per year. Lets calculate with average household size like 4.2, then at least a family should contribute Rs. 11,970 per year until 2018. Mr. President if you area a patriotic gentlemen please think twice how can our majority of people can afford this expenses. I totally agree with you if you could spend this money from your own pocket.

The commonwealth is a has been organisation run for the benefit of past colonialists and has no relevance in today´s world. Is the sri-lankan tax payer going to spend 4 billion, a collosal waste of money on this? I sincerely hope not. Besides the commonwealth secretary general just made adverse comments about sri-lanka based on the channel4 fictional TV programme. Why should the sri-lankan taxpayer ever consider being even part of this ´colonialists club´ I cannot imagine. Besides the wild areas of hambantota like yala, kumana, bundala would be very adversely affected if the commonwealth games are ever held there. I hope for the sake of our wildlife we don´t get these useless games. Our wildlife should come first not useless games.

Hambantota city does not deserve this honour - not yet. It would be inappropriate for the 2018 CWG to be held in SL given the country´s widespread corruption. Awarding the game would reward bad governance, social injustices and the denial of civil rights to some.

Is the Minister ready to take the Commission to the IDP Camps, and show them how well the IDPs are being treated, even 2 years after the end of the War? Couldn´t the proposed expenditure be better used for their Rehabilitation and Reconciliation? This will ensure a more Enduring Peace than grandiose schemes in the South.

If Sri Lanka did not contain the terrorists what we will see today is high powered C4 plastic explosions detonated by the terrorists killing scors of innocent Sri Lankan citizens on a daily basis.C4 documentary is an attempt by the remenents of few terrorists to sooth their pain of mind& this C4 the common wealth secretariot will agree is better than actual C4 plastic explosins all ower Sri Lanka.Further in the latter case 2018 common wealth games bid would never be taken seriously due to terrorist threat as no forigner for obvious reason would liked to get bombed.

The uni students are attcked by govt goons, The Media organisations are attacked, burnt and nobody charged. The journalists are attcked, abducted and murdered and nobody charged. Corruption is at its highest.
